“Once upon a time there was a girl who had 7 invisible horses. People thought she was crazy and that she in fact had 7 imaginary horses, but this was not the case. When autumn came the girl spent a whole day washing all her clothes. She hung them on a string in her garden to let the gentle autumn sun dry them. Out of nowhere, a terrible storm came and its fierce-full winds grabbed a hold of all her clothes and all seven horses (authors note: since they are invisible they obviously didn’t weigh much). The girl was devastated and spent all autumn looking for each horse spread around the country, wrapped in her clothes.”

Foodie blogger Olivia posted about her year of 2011 a while back and I often find myself daydreaming about how nice it would be to have a year so pleasant. Some might say it's the magic in her words, but take a look for yourself...you'll have a hard time not wishing you were a part of it.
(below are just a few of my favorite portions from the post)

I lived in France for six weeks. I ate fruit from trees and mastered the art of doing nothing. I embarrassed myself often and felt humbled. I liked being alone, I wanted to stay forever.

I spent invaluable time with a woman I deeply admire. She taught me how to photograph food and showed me what it means to possess infinite poise.

I was disenchanted by all things touristy. I felt guilty for being disappointed in Prague.

I came home, and everything was exactly how I left it.

Lindsey Adelman is my latest hero. Her light sculptures are completely mesmerizing. A few of my favorite personal creations are light fixtures created using unexpected materials while grouping them in uncommon forms...she's pretty much conquered this no? Not sure how to describe it, but I find whiskey distillery's crazy fascinating. I often find myself looking back to Todd Selby's post which took us inside the making of Hennessy. Although that is technically the process of distilling wine into brandy, I find it equally interesting. Anyways, what I'm sharing here pertains to the House Spirits Distillery out of Portland, OR and their famous White Dog whiskey. This specific form of whiskey is so special because of it's purity...it never sees the inside of a barrel. I recently learned that aging in the barrel not only adds flavors etc. but it can often hide several imperfections in the whiskey itself. The fact that they were able to create a full flavored whiskey without that process is a rare ability. The following cocktail recipes were given to Matt over at Wood and Faulk from Evan Kinkel at House Spirits himself!

The White Zombie

1 1/2 oz. White dog
3/4 oz. Fresh pressed lime juice
1/2 oz. Simple syrup
1/2 oz. B.G. Reynold’s Don’s Mix
Dash of Angustura bitters
Garnish with mint &lime

Silver Sunrise

1 1/2 oz. White Dog
1 oz. Stumptown cold brew
1/2 oz. Molasses syrup
3/4 oz. half & half
Dash of Reagan’s bitters
Garnish with an orange disc & cinnamon

(a day late!) This video follows a graffiti/arts group from Oak Cliff called Sour Grapes. I met them while living in Dallas a few years ago and must say, I've never came across such a humble group of men. They were some of the first graffiti writers I'd met that had serious purpose behind several of their works... esp. their project in support of the Paleteros. Please take the time to check out some of their work. I even own one of Congo's smaller pieces which is still one of my favorites to this day!

LUXE Magazine's latest show house in Beverly Hills is absolutely breathtaking! Several wonderful designers teamed up for the project, but my favorite creation was that of the famed Interior Design firm of Kendall Wilkinson. They worked on a "men's room" which has been dubbed the "twilight room." Although the room isn't stocked full of tufted leather armchairs and trophy heads from Safari Hunts, the firm was still spot on. The room oozes Hollywood Glamour, from a gold guild ceiling to a heavy textured carpet along with a few fabulous chic furnishings. If my budget allowed, I'd be remodeling my house with the abundance of inspiration this project has landed.

If you've ever wanted to be a part of what we do at NEST well here's your chance! I've recently taken possession of the historic NAT and cannot wait to bring Amarillo their first Indie Coop! No worries, I'll still be keeping NEST as my personal outlet, but would like to invite you fellow creative types to be a part of our new branch at the NAT. We still have a lot of details to hammer out as far as rental prices, events, etc. but if you would like to go ahead and put your name on the reservation list I only need a few details- Email your name and contact info. as well as a general idea of what size and product you would want to sell to info@nestonsixth.com (this can be as large or small as you'd like, and items can be vintage, new, handmade, big, small, whatever!) Also, don't think this binds you by any means. The reservation is simply to hold a place for you just in case this concept blows up, which we think it will, and we get overbooked. You can cancel this later on if you would like once we release further details.

Now if you are unfamiliar with the NAT, no worries, there is a plethora of information out there about it. (I've attached my favorite article about it below.) What we know for sure is that it's remained an Amarillo Landmark since it was erected in 1922 and we couldn't see it possibly condemned. The building sits on the corner of 6th and Georgia so drive on by if you'd like to check it out for yourself...it's the kind of castle looking venue.

The Natatorium, commonly known from its beginning as "The Nat," was originally built to house an open air community swimming pool, (36' by 101'), when it opened in July of 1922. It was designed by a well-known Amarillo architect, Guy Carlander, and was a very popular place to escape the Pan Handle heat! In fact, it was covered in 1923 so the pool could be used all year around.

However, 4 years later in 1926, The Natatorium was bought by J. D. Tucker who drained the pool, built sub-flooring and laid down 10,000 square feet of maple flooring on top of the pool, creating a fantastic dance floor and stage for Tucker's new dance palace / night club. The interior was decorated by Beaux Arts Studio. A second floor was added and part of it was used at some point as gambling rooms, sometime during the building's history. Bands, such a Ell Hoover and his Orchestra, were hired to play dance music for people who had paid 5 cents a ticket, for each dance.

Throughout its history, The Nat was also rented out for special events, parties, fundraisers and banquets, which provided additional income as well.

During the Depression years, an Amarillo businessman, Harry Badger, had some new ideas on improving The Nat. Harry bought the building, and renamed it, The Nat Dine and Dance Palace. He added the fortress architecture to the front in 1935, and built a unique entrance to the dance hall area, which not only opened up easy access for the public from route 66, but was also led to the newly created dining area, The Nat Cafe.

He greatly added to the The Nat's commercial value, attracting more people who were looking for a place to have a fine dinner and entertainment as well. Many quality orchestras under the Music Corporation of America played here, much to the pleasure of the public. Orchestras such as the Dorsey Brothers, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Guy Lombardo offered their musical performances for dance floor activity and dinner music! At its height of popularity, The Nat had 52 employees working there.

In the 1940's, Dr. William Maddox bought The Nat, and continued to offer quality music. Servicemen based at the Amarillo Air Force Base enjoyed hanging out here, where many met their future wives.
During the 1950's, early rock in rollers such as Little Richard, Roy Orbison, The Crickets and Buddy Holly entertained their fans.

In the 1960's, The Nat closed as a public dance hall, though it was still used for occasional concerts, and of course for community events.

In 1994, The Nat was placed in the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1995 it was declared a Texas Historical Landmark. Money became available to carefully renovate this place of happy memories. The second floor became an antique mall for awhile and The Nat Cafe space became a used book shop, which Tom and I visited. The old ballroom still hosts various musical bands and groups on occasion, such as the Dixie Chicks, and people in the community still use the building for special events.

Are you freaking kidding me? This rental company is aMaZiNg! I've seen others out there before that rent cool stuff, but it's all along the lines of antique trunks, jars, etc. Those are all great things, but I've never seen anyone like Yeah Rentals that will lease out mid-century modern goods in this kind of condition! Too bad we don't live closer to LA...anyone interested in branching out on a venture like this? I'd totally back you!

So after reading up on this crazy, amazing hotel I decided that Honestly WTF pretty much covered all the bases. Therefore, I'm just sharing their post here!

Would you be up for spending the night in a canvas tent, nestled in the Swiss Alps – just you, the snow, and the stars? I would! Especially if it’s as cool as the Whitepod Hotel. This hotel is comprised of 15 geodesic domed pods, furnished with a modern Alphine aesthetic and overlooking Lake Geneva. Guests have access to 3 private ski lifts which can be operated 24 hours a day upon request and 7 kilometers of exclusive trails. Bearing very little impact on the surrounding environment, the Whitepod is the epitome of eco winter clamping.

One of my dear friends referred the Shwood sunglasses to me a while back due to my love for all things wood grain, and while looking to purchase them from 80s Purple I found this neat video. I was saving it for around my nephew's birthday so I could share photos of my own experience, but things got crazy and I ended up opting for sparkler candles instead. Lone Star Living

While lounging around the farm this Christmas, the Mister's mother loaned me some light reading. Who knew I'd fall so in love. I was born and raised in Texas, graduated with a BFA in Interior Design in Texas, aaaand own a furniture and interior design business in Texas yet, somehow it never crossed my mind to really look into what makes design here, design here.
The book I'm referring to is Lone Star Living by Tyler Beard. I was hooked from page 1, which is where the introduction begins. Beard gives a brief background of his own ties to Texas living but quickly goes into detail about how Texas style originated. This is where I got really interested.
Growing up in a small city, but a city none-the-less, I always thought of cowboys as something that existed somewhat in story land. I never actually paid any mind to the fact that it was their lifestyle which created so many designs. These items were mostly influenced from the cowboys "isolation, imagination, and the lack of money." "Bunkhouse interior design" was a direct result of this.
These items are some of the more traditional, popular Texas themed designs; however, wealthy cattle men as well as the oil and cotton generation are to thank for all those early Victorian monstrosities throughout the state. The mansions were erected in large part because people finally had the means and money to ship supplies from New England and Europe. A crazy mix of East meets West, trendy and traditional tossed in with a little horn and hide, was how one could recognize that the home was built west of the Mississippi.
One thing Beard continually refers to is that Texans love to entertain and be entertained...the whole "The door is always open" motto which "applies to family, friends, and anyone a true Texan has not yet met." Another thing I was unaware of about Texas is that, "the state motto is "Friendship, " and that the word Texas, or Tejas, was the Spanish pronunciation of a Caddo Indian word meaning friends." So it all kind of starts to make sense, the reason why Texas doesn't really have one specific style.
I was especially shocked after reading that the tour, or showing off of the house, is considered peculiar and perplexes visitors from other states and countries! This is something I've participated in around the state since I was a child- from Amarillo's Parade of Homes to Swiss Avenue's annual Mother's Day Home Tour. I'm almost not to sure I buy into the idea that people don't enjoy sharing their home, their whole home, with their guests, haha!
Overall, my favorite part of the book is once again in the Introduction. Mostly because after taking an outward look at how I've been influenced over the years and why my very own store looks the way it does is in a large part due to this:
"The open spaces of Texas translate to freedom of expression and the notion that there is plenty of room for everyone to do their thing. Texans feel that going to extremes through building and decorating is a birthright. Whatever the personal taste, whatever the scale, home design inside and out has emerged as a vital form of self-expression- a monument to who you are, where you have been, and what you might become. Texas style is not one specific and constant motif, but an exotic hybrid born primarily of Texas's multiculturalism. The result is an unequaled heritage in home decorating and architecture."

Hello again! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season & a very happy new year! Our little blog makeover, special thanks to Ana from Liven Design, could not have came due at a better time. Fancy huh? Not only do we have these nifty links at the top but we have a share button on the lower right hand side too! If you like what ya see here please spread the love by posting it to your own site. This month I have a lot of exciting posts planned for the blog. These posts include some amazing DIY tutorials, local Amarillo home tours, as well as a possible Pop Up shop!!! Not quite sure how I grew up 4 hours from the Rio Grande Gorge without ever witnessing it in person, but it could have easily been the highlight of my trip... Magical to say the least.

The piñata I created for the big New Year's Eve moment was a hit- Full of glitter, liquor, candy, & TNT!

And last, a big Thanks to the Reeder's for their hospitality by letting us enjoy the holiday at their lovely new cabin!

This year my family is hosting a Handmade Gift Swap and I am so excited about it! My sister and I are a bit competitve so after I saw her adorable Cork Pot Holders I realized my tiny clay Mobile would not be enough; therefore, I found some amazing antique glass bottles and repurposed them into Soap & Lotion duos.

Here's How:

-you will need a bottle and a soap dispenser-

-use a drill bit to create a hole large enough for the soap dispenser to fit snug into the lid-

-fill the bottles with your favorite soap and/or lotion-

-these had little etched circles on the back which provided a perfect spot for a label-

-and voila-

How amazing does Olivia Rae at Everyday Musings meringue pumpkin pudding look- Out of this World to me.

Inspired by Kate Miss's pretty meringue pie and adapted from Deb's baked pumpkin pudding.

1 15-ounce can pumpkin puree
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1 cup plain Greek Yogurt
1/2 cup half and half
2 large eggs

Stir pumpkin, sugar, salt, and spices over medium heat for 5-10 minutes. Turn heat to low, and add yogurt and cream. Turn heat off completely, and beat in eggs. Bake for 40 minutes or until a knife comes out of the center clean.

For the meringue I used a basic recipe, added a bit of cinnamon and vanilla extract, and baked on top of the pudding for an extra ten minutes. It's fluffy and beautiful. Chill for a couple hours before eating. (If you decide to forgo the meringue, I highly recommend topping the pudding with whipped cream and crushed spice cookies like so.)

Starting tomorrow things are supposed to get pretty chilly around here, and with the holidays fast approaching this Whiskey Cider is lookin' quite tasty if I do say so myself!

Ingredients
Makes 3 servings

3 cups of apple juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 shots (a bit more than half a cup) of Irish Whiskey
3 cinnamon sticks

Methodology

Heat apple juice and spices in a pot on the stove. Once hot (close to boiling), remove from heat, give the juice a stir and let the spices infuse. The spices may appear to be clumping at the start, but after cooling for 5 minutes, they will settle to the bottom of the mix. Add whiskey and reheat to serve.

Alright, so if you have not heard about the Longboard Girls Crew I'm hear to tell ya, they are flippin' awesome and you should def. familiarize yourself with them! They are a group of ladies from all over the world that got together to skate since they were tired of being the minority at various longboard functions and competitions. I find it so inspiring that they saw a void in this predominately male community and they addressed it. The result was a swell of relaxation and confidence...not to mention really lovely videos thanks to Juan Rayos. Seeing as snow flurries are somehow in our forecast for later this week, I find this excerpt from the film Rivers and Tides quite fitting. I'm only showing a clip here and I apologize in advance for the blurry pixels; however, all the more reason you should rent and watch the entire documentary. It follows artist Andy Goldsworthy as he creates beautiful works with time and nature. What I would give to watch this man in person and to experience the way time affects each piece.

a First in San Francisco

Well I missed one, just like I said when beginning this post concept. That's okay though because this fella was worth the wait! I've had the pleasure of knowing a few others throughout my life that remind me of him...now if only I could arm them with a camera and the patience to edit the material into something wonderful like the short films below. This mans name is Rick Mereki and after spending 44 days taking 18 flights to 11 different countries he came up with these. Three documentations of sights he saw, the food he ate, and the experiences he learned from. I hope they inspire you as much as they do me.

to these two individuals. Someone recently put birthdays in a different perspective than I had ever looked at before. They described how much more special the holiday is for mothers. While we celebrate another trip around the sun, our mother's are celebrating the day they finally got to meet us face to face. I thought it was a really lovely notion so today I'm taking a second to say thank you to my mother & father... not just for bringing me into this world but for putting up with me for these past couple decades.

Oh and a Happy Birthday to my Dad too! (we've got a crazy b.day pattern in my family. mother/sister = same day; father/me = same day)
